CACTUS - Live in Concert 2012

[add_to_cart_wrapper id="2207"]
151 min, concert plus Interview
A Behind Closed Doors Production, GER 2020

Carmine Appice, Jim McCarty, Jimmy Kunes, Pete Bremy, Randy Pratt

42 years after their last appearance in Germany, opening for Jimi Hendrix at Fehmarn Island,

Cactus returned and played a Europan tour that attracted huge attention at fans and the music press.

This concert was recorded at “Hirsch” in Nuremberg, July 2012

The American Led Zeppelin

Cactus was initially conceived in late 1969 by former Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert (+2021) and drummer Carmine Appice after plans to team up with guitarist Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had an automobile accident and was out of the music scene for over a year.

In early 1970, Bogert and Appice brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder´s Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day (+ 1982) from The Amboy Dukes.

They were called “The American Led Zeppelin” back in 1970. Tall words, indeed, but Cactus – Carmine Appice, Jim McCarty, Tim Bogert and Rusty Day – came out in 1969 with a big bang, only months after their brit counterparts.
4 albums later – Cactus (1970), One Way…or Another (1971), Restrictions (1971), Ot´n´Sweaty (1972) – Cactus  broke up in 1973.

The band that made such an impression with their loud blues-edged hard rock madness. The band that influenced the likes of Van Halen, King’s X, Billy Sheehan, David Coverdale or Kid Rock, just to name a few.
The band that foreshadowed heavy music itself, reunited in 2006 with

Carmine, Jim, Tim and ex-Savoy Brown lead singer Jimmy Kunes and released their 5th album “Cactus V”.

42 years after their last appearance in Germany, opening for Jimi Hendrix at Fehmarn Island, Cactus returned and played a tour that attracted huge attention at fans and the music press.

Cactus released their 6th album „Black Dawn“ in 2016.

Carmine Appice

“Carmine Appice set the foundation for heavy drumming, before Bonham, before Ian Paice, before anyone else.” – Rick Van Horn, Modern Drummer

As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously,

The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing,

Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.

Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).

One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. In ‘76, he joined Rod Stewart‘s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart‘s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I‘m Sexy’ and “Young Turks.’ He left Stewart to record his first solo album, “Rockers’, and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80’s, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80’s, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80’s, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record “Momentary Lapse of Reason’ and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake‘s John Sykes and The Firm‘s Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group.

As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first Rock Drummer and Rock Musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world.

Jim McCarty

James William McCarty performed besides of Cactus with Mitch Ryder, The Detroit Wheels, Buddy Miles Express, the Detroit Blues Band and more recently with Mystery Train.

In 2005, Les Paul recorded Les Paul and Friends: American Made, World Played, with an all-star band. He covered 69 Freedom Special, an instrumental tune co-written by McCarty and recorded while in theBuddy Miles Express. In February 2006, Les Paul won a Grammy for his cover of the song, thus propelling McCarty into another award-winning arena as songwriter.

On September 25, 2010, Jim McCarty was inducted into the Canada South Blues Society. “Living Blues Museum” located in Windsor, Ontario.

He also recorded with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Seger. He plays in a heavy blues-rock style that has inspired fledgling guitar players for more than 40 years.

In an August 2006 interview on VH1 – Classic, ted Nugent remarked “I’m the only guy in Rock´nRoll that plays that hollow body jazz guitar and it’s because in 1960 I saw Jimmy McCarty creating those big fat full chords like I do on “Stranglehold”; I learned that from Jimmy McCarty. Remember the name Jimmy McCarty. He is as important as Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry and Les Paul…a god on guitar.”

Jimmy Kunes

Jimmy Kunes has fronted, recorded and toured with Savoy Brown, Kim Simmonds Band, and Silent Partner(ex-RIOT members). More recent projects include the debut Flood The Engine album (2013), American Mafia (2014), “American Rock Celebration” with Dennis Dunaway, founder member of The Alice Cooper Group. (2015), National Wrecking Company (2019) and New Decade with Greg Di Benedetto in 2021.

Jimmy Kunes Band solo albums include LOVE TRAIN/ “Slow Moving Vehicle” (1999), “GATE OF ALL SAINTS” (2006) w/Robert Kearns (Cry Of Love, Sheryl Crow, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bottlerockets), Simon Kirke (FREE/BAD Co.), and Steve Gorman (Black Crowes/Stereophonics). A third album, Jimmy Kunes Congregation underway and is scheduled for 2021 release.

Jimmy fronted Starz at a festival in San Antonio, TX in Jan. 2019.

In 2002 Jimmy recorded the theme for Eric Bischoff entitled “I`m Back” at WWE studio in Stanford, CT. for the W.W.E./ World Wrestling Entertainment “ANTHOLOGY” 3 C.D. set. The song still airs at W.W.E. matches and “ANTHOLOGY” was a top ten Independent Billboard charting release.

Pete Bremy

Pete Bremy began his musical career as a drummer, to which he credits his ability as a groove player. “I can think like a drummer. I’m pretty quick on my feet, and when I get to know them, most of the time I can predict what they’re going to do and add pitch to the drums.”

Pete spent most of his career in the northern New Jersey club circuit until 1998, when he met Vince Martell, lead guitarist of the Vanilla Fudge.

Legendary bassist Tim Bogert was Bremy’s biggest influence, and he knew most of the Vanilla Fudge material and Cactus as well. When Martell formed a new solo project, he called on Bremy. In January 2002, literally 24 hours before the start of a Vanilla Fudge reunion tour, Bogert was suddenly hospitalized with pneumonia and Pete was called in to sub. Pete continued to sub for Bogert in Vanilla Fudge for years, and in 2008 for Cactus as well. Bogert retired from touring in 2010 and Pete has since been the regular bassist for Vanilla Fudge, and with Cactus since 2012.

In 2011, Pete appeared with Vanilla Fudge on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. In addition to performing and recording with Vanilla Fudge and Cactus, Pete has performed with Lou Pallo (Les Paul Trio), Essra Mohawk, The Soul Survivors, T.M. Stevens, and Eddie Brigatti and Gene Cornish.

Randy Pratt

In Randy’s own words, “I been playing music since the early 80s. Before that I was a poser and an obsessed fan-boy. I first got into Rock music when the Beatles arrived in America. I went to the Fillmore East a lot in ’70-’71. I saw Led Zepplin, King Crimson (w/Greg Lake) Fleetwood Mac (w/ Peter Green)

I hate to sound like someone’s dad, but I think Rock was probably peaking then. We have a joke, “Nothing after ’78”. We’re really not that self-concious about it, but that’s the period we’re most influenced by. When the blues was still felt in the music.

Another major influence on me is old-school Funk. When I was a kid in ’67, I saw James Brown at Yankee Stadium. WOW! He’s like Mozart to me. Sly Stone, Ohio Players, Slave. There’s an element of that in the music of The Lizards, and you’ll be hearing it more as we develop. There’s a “sweet spot” where James Brown and Black Sabbath meet. We want to be there”

Influences:
Trapeze, Stray Dog, Cactus, Vanilla Fudge, Boomerang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, Bad Company, Detective, The Babys, Pink Floyd, Little Feat, Spooky Tooth, Mountain, Grand Funk, King Crimson (’til “Red”) Gentle Giant, Jeff Buckley, Humble Pie, Captain Beyond, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck Group, The Doors, Hendrix, Frank Marino, Blue Cheer, Randy Holden, Black Sabbath, James Brown, Ohio Players, Sly Stone, P-Funk, Slave

FILMORCHESTER BABELSBERG

The first film orchestra was founded in 1918. When requirements shifted toward films with sound, the studio adapted the orchestra’s set-up to these needs in 1932. The orchestra stoically weathered the Second World War and remained unscathed. In 1946, its work continued under the wings of the German Democratic Republic’s DEFA studio.

Until its demise in 1989, all film and movie productions in the GDR were exclusively recorded by and with the DEFA Symphonic Orchestra.

After the studio’s sale and subsequent re-structuring, the orchestra and its musicians were part of the Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra until 1993. Together with the musicians of Berlin’s RBT orchestra, the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg was re-founded in its current form.

After 26 years, the orchestra has a wide number of productions, concerts, and tours to show for its efforts. More than 1000 national and international projects were recorded and produced in its Potsdam studios.

Gus G.

The list of guitarists Ozzy Osbourne has worked with throughout his career is second to none, including Randy Rhoads, Brad Gillis, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde. So, whenever the Prince of Darkness announces a new shredder in his line-up, headbangers certainly take note. And for his 2010 offering, Scream, that six-stringer was Gus G.

After Gus left Ozzy’s band in 2017, he concentrated on his power-metal band FIREWIND and on his solo career.  Gus G has released three albums under his own name: I Am The Fire (2014), Brand New Revolution (2015), and Fearless (2018) each a mix of instrumentals and songs with guest vocalists.

His fourth studio album “Quantum Leap” (AFM Records) , written and recorded during the pandemic is an all instrumental master piece, where he incorporates his traditional sounds and new experimentations, from Metal, Classic Hard Rock to Progressive Metal.
Quantum Leap” promises to thrill those who worship STEVE VAI‘s “Passion and Warfare” and JOE SATRIANI‘s “Surfing with the Alien“, such is the way it skitters across a spectrum of melodic metal styles while still delivering hooks galore.

In February 2022 Gus decided to give birth to the Quantum Leap Session. Due to the pandemic these songs of the new album never have been played on stage, the band met in a studio near Munich to play songs of the Quantum Leap album, plus some encorse live.
Backed by a massive light and video show the session comes with a crystal clear sond and is really impressive.

The Quantum Leap Session prooves, why Gus G is one of the best guitar players on this planet!
